2021.10.23 15:03 jacobjkeyes TIFU by knocking out a building's access control by adding a single strobe light

Not directly fire alarm specific but very related.
Client: Small private school. They have one blue flashing strobe light in each classroom mounted directly to a ceiling tile. These lights are all activated by a single switch in the admin offices. If there's a shooter on campus or tornado or whatever, they hit the switch to begin strobing to alert the teachers to lock the doors and go into lockdown mode. Pretty important stuff. All of the lights are 12V with some being incans and some being LED depending on when they were installed. The school had just reno'ed a storage room into a classroom and now wanted a strobe in there. We did not do any of the installation up to this point. There was no documentation or wiring diagram. It was all done by OtherGuy™.
Now before we go any further, I know it's really unprofessional to come into a new site and immediately throw OtherGuy under the bus and say you need to throw his work in the trash. You can't always do that though. Maybe OtherGuy wasn't given the budget required. Maybe OtherGuy told them that X is a temp fix and he will NEED to come out next week to finish the job and they told him don't bother. Maybe it's not OtherGuy but OTHEROtherGuy who came before him that did bad work. You can just never know sometimes.
Well I am confident that OtherGuy did bad work.
So we get out to the site and examine how things are wired before school starts by popping a tile and looking at an already installed strobe. Looks pretty simple. 22/2 wire run to it with Red as hot and Black as ground. Simple enough. Since it's before school, we ask admins if we can activate the system to see if/how it works. We do so, and they all start strobing. We check the side of one and it says "UL Listed / 12VDC" Good. We brought the correct light.
I then turn off the system by setting the switch to off, then put a meter on the screw terminals of the light. 0 volts. Good, System is dead. The wire for these lights runs just laying on the ceiling tile grid which... isn't good. But not our problem today. It sometimes is above the grid and sometime disappears in a (non-firestopped) hole up into the attic.
Based on where they want the new light where we can get to some existing strobe light wiring, it doesn't make sense to run the wire off an existing light. It would be better to cut and splice into a span of wire between two lights. We brought a jbox and properly sized wire nuts to make the splice because we have standards.
So I go to the desired splice point which is above the tiles in a central area and cut the wire. Odd. It's not 22/2 like I thought. It's 22/4. Whatever, green and white aren't used I guess. I install the jbox, then run the two ends of the cut wire into the jbox and a third line (we brought 18/2) out of the box and to the new classroom. We use cable supports for our wire because we're not monsters. Install the light into the tile, connect up the wire, easy peasy. Done in less than an hour.
Or so we thought.
As I'm finishing up and about to hit the switch, one of the admin people asks me why the front door isn't re-locking. Huh. Odd. We didn't unplug anything... did we?
I go and check it with the meter. Electric strike. Dead to the world. 0 volts. So I ask where it's fed from. They have no idea. Sigh.
Go back to the wiring closet / electrical room. I smell smoke.
I open the old as hell beige box with no label and find exactly what I had feared. Inside is (or... was) a security power supply. It was a 24Volt unit with NO/C/NC inputs on the top and power outputs on the bottom. With certain parts on the circuit board that were now black. And smelled of smoke.
I was 100% sure that there was NO power running through those lights when I made that cut. How the hell did I blow up the door access power supply?
Then something dawned on me.
The wires going into that electric strike lock weren't red and black. They were white and green.
The realization of what happened occurs to me. OtherGuy ran power to the strobe lights AND the electric strike locks over the SAME 22/4 cable. He used one pair for the lights and one pair for the strikes.
But wait. Those lights are rated at 12VDC. Was he really sending 24VDC to lights that are rated for 12? Answer: Yes he was. Somehow they hadn't blown up.
But wait x 2. That was a single zone power supply... and looking at the wiring on it, it soon became clear what he had done.
Red was +24VDC
White was +24VDC
Black was ground
Red ran from the 24VDC PSU to the switch in the admin offices, and then onwards to the strobe lights.
White ran from the 24VDC PSU thru the access control module (which was also dead) and then onwards to the electric strike lock.
Black was the common ground.
And when I cut through it, I short-circuited the PSU and blew out the access control computer.
As we continued to investigate the problem, we got up into the attic proper and... welllllll let's just say that OtherGuy or the people who worked up here had never even heard of a code book.
There was 22/4 and 22/2 zip tied to MC
There were 2ft x 4ft holes cut into "1 hour firewalls" so that you could climb through
Cables of all kinds, Ethernet, phone, 120V power, all of it were just laid on the rafters, buried in insulation, or braided together into some kind of whip from hell and then electrical taped together.
My personal favorite was the J-Hook full of all kinds of cables that was screwed into the side of an AC Duct and somehow still holding on.
The wiring for the blue strobe lights itself was an impossible mess of random splices. Some didn't have wire nuts and were just bare copper twisted together and bent to sit in open air. None were in jboxes. Sometimes black was spliced to green. Sometimes it wasn't. Sometimes it would be spliced so as to scramble all the colors and then spliced to UNSCRAMBLE the colors 6 feet later.
At that point, we came back down the ladder, and explained what had happened. The whole thing. It was SO HARD to not dunk on OtherGuy, but how do you explain that you have 10-15 years of code-fail neglect up there that now has to be addressed and it caused you to blow out their access control system?
By the way, we are NOT faultless in this. We should've figured out what was running on EACH of those wires before we cut, but when we looked at the example strobe in question, we only saw red/black. OtherGuy had clipped Green/White back so close to where the outer jacket was, it's a wonder that never shorted on its own.
Now comes the question of who pays for what, which will be a negotiation over the next couple weeks I'm sure. In the meantime, we advised them that their front door will now need to be opened via metal key rather than card swipe. And they will be using their backup lockdown method (whistle) until we figure something out.
One thing's for sure, if we get approved to fix all this, all of our wire is going in EMT with fire stop. We'll have labelled and documented systems with diagrams, and we won't be running the damned door locks over the same wires as some strobe lights. At the wrong voltage.
So yeah. That was a fun Friday.

2021.10.23 15:03 WhyTryForQuality What Killer should I get during the sale?

I'm an extremely new player on Switch (<100 hours) who bought Demo and Ph, taking advantage of the discount before Demo goes away. Because of this I have enough blood points to get a killer during the Halloween sale. Which one should I get? I play Wriath, Demo, PH, and Hag. (PH is the only one I'd say I'm decent with, but the other three are tons of fun). Personally, I'm thinking of getting Twins (They look like a lot of fun), but I can grind and them free. Any suggestions for what killer I should get?
I already have: Trapper, Nurse, Billy, Wraith, Clown, Spirit, Hag, Doctor, Demo, and PH.
Thanks in advance!

I know tomorrow there is a very high chance that things between the fans of both teams are going to get very heated and borderline toxic and the idiots from the winning side won't necessarily be gracious winners , hence this is a thread for those of us who have something nice to say about the other team before the mother of all rivalries commences ( Sorry Ashes), as at the end of the day when India and Pakistan play cricket , the winner is cricket and we also fill everyone else's pockets.
I'll get the ball rolling , Shaheen Afridi is my favourite Pakistani player, he is a very talented bowler and seems like a genuinely nice bloke , and there is a good chance he causes some trouble at the top if India aren't cautious, while I hope he does well given I like to watch him bowl, I hope he saves the performances for your actual rivals NZ who left you blue balled recently.

2021.10.23 15:03 Mccremee Xtrfy GP4 Black Uncoated Review

I've been using this pad for about two months now and here at my thoughts on it starting from first impressions to what I've noticed over time as a former GSR user.
Initial Impressions - The packaging is very tight, causing the pad to lot lay flat at first but I didn't have as much of an issue as other people did, I simply rolled folded it opposite ways and applied pressure. It was completely flat after about an hour of sitting on my desk and being used. The smell is awful, like permanent marker almost, it gave me headaches and for the first 2 days I only used it for about an hour each day before I got sick of the smell and went back to my razer strider. At first the pad felt like cheap rubber but over time it felt like a normal pad, also stitching could be better.
How does it feel to play on - Closest thing I can compare it to is kinda like a gsr, it feels like it should be muddy but it isn't. It has low initial friction making micro adjustments clean and easy to perform but it maintains heavy stopping power like you except out of a control pad. Compared to the gsr where the initial friction is high and maintained all throughout the pad making micro adjustments difficult. Tracking - 7.5/10, It is not no razer strider or artisan hien. But for a control pad, I can track pretty damn good on this pad and no struggles doing it because of the lower initial friction compared to other pads in its category. Target Switching - 9/10 - As you should expect out of a control pad, you can stop on a dime very easily. I have no issues with overflicking or underflicking. I feel it outperforms every other control pad while obviously being beat by slow pads when it comes to stopping power. Precision - 8/10 - Lower initial friction makes for really nice tracking; however, when it comes to micro flicks I did find at first the stopping power for slight mouse movements was slightly and you had to be a lot more "manual" with your aim rather than relying on the stopping power of your pad like you would a gsr. I mained a gsr for val/csgo and a hien/strider for faster paced shooters so this isn't an issue but if you are use to mud pads for tactical shooters it will take a second to adjust
Speed - 6/10 - Initial movement of your mouse on the micro level feels faster than mud pads even most control pads but overall non-micro mouse movements are about what you would expect out of a control pad. It's smooth but you can feel that stopping power. Again this isn't a hien, this is a control pad so don't expect it to be super fast. It is really smooth when you move your mouse fast but you feel you can still just stop it really easily
Final thoughts when it comes to performance - Overall it's a good pad, I wouldn't say it masters anything, it is inbetween a mud pad and a mid pad, but on the faster side of control while kind of maintaining the stopping power of a mud pad just a tiny bit less. I now main this pad over the GSR for tactical shooters and when i'm too lazy to switch to the Razer Strider or Hien for faster paced games (apex, cod,ow) I use this pad with excellent performance still.
Concerning Temperature/Humidity 10/10 - I live in Alaska, so if I want it cold during these months I just simply open my window ta da, if I want it warm/hot every house here has heaters. Cold, Warm, or Hot this pad is not affected which is why I picked it up. There are no true control/slow pads which have this characteristic except the GP4 and the Esports Tiger neon (this is coated so it's not good after a few months) which is why I went for it. The pad feel identical to the day I bought it.
Comfort/stitching 8/10 - The stitching isn't great but it does sit the tiniest 1/1000000 of a mm under the cloth surfance so I don't run into it with my mouse. I am a high sense aimer so I don't move my arm a lot but it's kinda uncomfortable/slow when I do. It's kind of worse than a gsr when it comes to this. Like it feels like it should be a mud pad but it isn't.
Conclusion - 8.5/10. New main for Slow Paced Shooters.

2021.10.23 15:03 TheThatGuy1 Why do boats need such large engines?

I've always wondered this and no one has ever been able to give me a good answer. The engines don't have to move the boat itself directly, they are moving the propeller. On giant cargo ships, the propellers only spin around 250 rpms. I would think that just a regular car engine would be able to spin a propeller that fast. The gearing for this would make the job of the engine far easier so I would think it would be no problem.
Obviously this isn't the case since ships use such massive engines but I want to understand why.
